The Kelso and Walnut apartments are conveniently located near stops on the Crenshaw Light Rail Line. An expansion project is underway to extend the line all the way into LAX, allowing residents easy access to the airport and many other locations in the Los Angeles Area. Below, an excerpt from the Metro’s website on the Crenshaw/LAX transit project:

A January 21, 2014 groundbreaking ceremony, attended by members of the community, Metro officials, and local, state and federal representatives, marked the official beginning of construction on the $2.058 billion Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project.

The majority of the current work consists of advanced utility relocation with heavy construction set to begin summer 2014. Residents will soon see a quicker pace to construction along the corridor and new job opportunities.

Utility relocation has commenced along three points on Crenshaw Bl and has mainly consisted of the completed storm drain replacement at the intersection of 48th St/ Crenshaw Bl and the ongoing sewer line relocation at the intersections of 60th St/ Crenshaw Bl and 67th St /Crenshaw Bl. Heavy construction will begin with the demolition of the Metro properties at Crenshaw/Exposition and selected properties along the Metro right-of-way.

In 2012 Metro became the nation’s first transit agency to adopt a Project Labor Agreement (PLA) with national targeted hiring goals for federally funded, Federal Transit Administration (FTA) approved projects valued over $2.5 million. The historic PLA will not only provide construction employment and training opportunities to many who reside along the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project alignment, it will help build the workforce of tomorrow.

The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project is an 8.5-mile light-rail line, with eight stations, including Leimert Park and Hindry. The rail line will run between the Expo Line on Exposition Bl and the Metro Green Line. It will consist of aerial (La Brea Av/ La Cienega Bl and 405 Freeway/ Century Bl) and below-grade segments (Exposition Bl to 48th St/59th Pl to 67th St/ Los Angeles International Airport South Runways) with all remaining areas at-grade.

The Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project will serve the Crenshaw District, Inglewood, Westchester and surrounding area with eight stations, at:

  • Expo/Crenshaw
  • Crenshaw/Martin Luther King
  • Crenshaw/Vernon (Leimert Park)
  • Crenshaw/Slauson
  • Florence/West
  • Florence/La Brea
  • Florence/Hindry
  • Aviation/Century

In addition to the alternative transportation option to congested roadways, the project will also provide significant environmental benefits, economic development and employment opportunities throughout Los Angeles County.

The Crenshaw/LAX Project is one of 12 transit projects funded by Measure R, the half-cent sales tax approved by Los Angeles County voters in 2008.
